WYSTAWA: Chleb i róże. Artyści wobec podziałów klasowych | EXHIBITION: Bread and Roses
Wystawa zadaje pytanie o to, jak artyści definiują swój status i pozycję wobec ekonomicznych nierówności, których wzrost obserwujemy obecnie. Pyta, jak pogodzić marzenia o sprawiedliwości społecznej z potrzebą wolności i autonomii artystycznej, wskazując napięcie między dość ambiwalentną przynależnością artystów do elit inteligenckich lub finansowych a odpowiedzialnością twórców za resztę społeczeństwa. Artyści zajmują bowiem paradoksalną pozycję klasową. Za Pierrem Bourdieu można nazwać artystów „zdominowaną częścią klasy dominującej”. Mogą oni równocześnie „flirtować” z dominującą elitą oraz z tymi, którzy czują się przez nią zdominowani i dążą do emancypacji.
Awangardowe marzenie o twórczości, która przekraczałaby granicę między sztuką a życiem wydaje się przebrzmiałym mitem. Widać jednak, że sztuka nie chce zgodzić się na odgrywanie wyłącznie roli luksusowej dekoracji w burżuazyjnym salonie. Marzeń społecznie zaangażowanej awangardy z XX wieku nie można obecnie ani zrealizować, ani porzucić, co skazuje ją na trwanie w zawieszeniu między chlebem a różami.

The exhibition formulates a question about the way artists define their status and position in the realm of an ever-widening economic gap. A question about the possibility to reconcile dreams of social justice with the need of artistic freedom and autonomy. At the same time, the show highlights the tension between artists’ rather ambivalent affiliation with the intellectual or financial elite and their responsibility for the rest of the society. For artists occupy a paradoxical position among social classes. Quoting Pierre Bourdieu, they form “the dominated part of the dominant class;” they can “flirt” both with the dominant elite and with the emancipation-oriented groups who feel oppressed.
The avant-garde dream of creative practice that would go beyond the border of art and life appears as a dated myth. Still, we can see that art refuses to limit itself to the role of a luxury decoration in a bourgeois salon. Currently, the dreams of the socially engaged Avant-garde of the 20th century can be neither fulfilled nor abandoned, which leaves it suspended between bread and roses.
