The course will explore the history and evolution of animation film. Traditional and non-traditional forms and techniques of the medium will be investigated, so to improve the knowledge about the aesthetics and set of practises in a range of historical and cultural settings. Our meetings will form a blend of engaging discussions, with a set of academic and critical readings and various screenings of animated material.


We will explore the subject chronologically, by form, by genre, by culture, by technological advances, by individuals who have shaped this field of art till now.

PROGRAMME:

1) The origins and beginning of animation film.
2) Great pioneers: Starewicz, the Fleischer Brothers, Reiniger, Fischinger.
3) Walt Disney and classical narrative.
4) The National Film Board of Canada and Norman McLaren.
5) Animation and sound: physicality and structural design.
6) Warner Brothers Cartoons and UPA.
7) Banned animation: WWII and the 'iron curtain'.
8) The birth of TV animation.
9) Experimental and abstract forms.
10) The Golden Age of Polish Animation.
11) Introduction to anime. Hayao Miyazaki.
12) The Quay Brothers vs Tim Burton.
13) Computer animation and new forms of expression.
14) Animation and other media.
15) Defining animation film genres and hybridity.

Course instructor:
Grzegorz Pamrów - has graduated with merits from the University of Sydney, Department of Arts and Film Studies. He's also a graduate of Linguistic Studies from Warsaw University an English Studies from SWPS University. He participated in numerous film and art workshops and courses organized by the University of Sydney, and Universal Pictures (Australia). He collaborated with different universities and organizations, including teaching courses devoted to art, film and medicine. From 2010 to 2013, an academic teacher at the Institute of English Studies at SWPS, he taught classes on History of Hollywood, Music Video Analysis, Introduction to New Media, and Steven Spielberg. Gregory has been a Deputy Director of Film Laboratory at SWPS (academic/research film consulting center). A great fan of animation film and probably the owner of the biggest animation film book collection in Central Europe:)
